ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Katherine Raymond was born in 1971 in Knoxville, Tennessee and grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. She's lived in both Arizona and California as well. A lifelong love of nature brought her to a degree in 1995 in Horticulture and a career as a landscape designer and horticulturalist. In 2019, a passion for the arts culminated in her receiving a bachelors degree in Visual Arts from Middle Tennessee State University. Her curiosity drives her to experimentation with medium and subject. Her background laid a foundation for her desire to preserve the land around her through her art and activism. Katherine lives and works out of her home studio in Franklin, Tennessee. ARTIST STATEMENT: I paint because I love the process, the materials and the thrill of creating something out of nothing. Painting is my challenge and reward. It never gets old. The landscape is my subject. I blend representation and abstraction, using oil and cold wax as my medium. Cold wax is a medium made of beeswax and odorless mineral spirits. My paintings are a built history, made with layers, mark making, texture and color. I share my time between studio and plein air practices. I paint the landscape in many ways and for the same reasons as so many before me; to capture the beauty of nature, to express emotion, to document locations, for the spiritual experience, and to connect my self to a place and moment. I am influenced by the American Tonalists, Color Field art, abstract expressionism and the impressionists. I have a long history of being an advocate for the environment and for many years I have painted my local landscapes in an effort to raise awareness for land conservation and participating in fund raising for sustaining existing green spaces. I have also started a series called “Land for Sale.” This series is my reaction to my native Middle Tennessee’s disappearing farm land to development. I want to document these places on the canvas, as I interpret them, in an effort to bring awareness to their beauty, I hope to convey a need for land preservation and responsible urban planning for our future generations.
